[-ʃ-; Sanskrit artha »Gewinn weltlicher Güter« und shastra »Lehrbuch«] das, zur Gattung der Shastras gehörendes indisches Staatslehrbuch mit stark machiavellistischen Tendenzen. Nachdem der Text lange als verschollen gegolten hatte, wurde er zu Beginn des 20. Jahrhunderts wieder entdeckt und 1909 veröffentlicht (deutsch von Johann J. Meyer 1926, Neudruck 1977 unter dem Titel »Das altindische Buch vom Welt- und Staatsleben. Das Arthaçāstra des Kautilya«). Ob es sich bei den Verfassern des Arthashastra um eine (Canakya?, Kautilya?, Vishnugupta?) oder mehrere Personen handelt, ist ebenso umstritten wie die Entstehungszeit, deren Datierungen von etwa 300 v. Chr. bis 300 n. Chr. schwanken.
